A Q&A with Shehla Qureshi, claims manager, Cyber and Tech E&O

It’s impossible to conduct business today without technology. It’s also impossible to integrate technology into a business without exposing the enterprise to risk — not just the risk of lost data or intellectual property, but the loss of reputation and customer confidence.

AXA XL’s cyber claims team responds to cyber incidents but, more important, works with clients to develop the knowledge necessary to protect digital assets and prevent attacks. Shehla Qureshi manages a team whose diverse breadth of experience personally, and across client industries, contributes to response effectiveness in the event of a cyber breach.

With cyber threats so pervasive and potentially so damaging, what strategies have you put in place to ensure that you attract and retain top talent in this field?
Shehla: Technology is generally seen as a male-dominated sector. But we’re a department of 18 people, and women comprise more than two-thirds of the team and hold all the leadership positions. The environment is one that embraces diversity consciously and unconsciously. For example, we host diversity and inclusion trainings to support for that aspect of our corporate culture. That’s the formal part of the equation, and we actively promote understanding that diversity encompasses not just gender, race, ethnicity or religion, but also age, disability, neurodiversity and cultural differences. The team as a whole feels empowered by those trainings because we are so actively welcoming of differences within the team.

Is that something you’ve experienced on a personal level?
As a woman of color who comes from a different ethnic and religious background, I can say that 色多多视频is the first company that’s made me feel heard and seen. I was born and raised in the US. I attended school, college, and law school here, and I’ve worked for law firms and in other corporate settings, but this is the first experience I’ve had as an employee who felt heard. How did that happen? It was something deceptively simple. We have a floating holiday that can be used for Lunar New Year, Diwali, Eid-al-Fitr, Juneteenth, Indigenous Persons Day — the list continues to expand — and the fact that the company included these in the list meant a great deal to me. And I’m not alone in this. I recall a conversation with another woman of color here who had the same impression. It’s common now for big companies to talk about having a global outlook, but here we have a case of a company that demonstrates to its employees that it really has embraced a global, multicultural ethos.

Do you see that cultural perspective expressed by individual team members, as well?
Absolutely. I attended a family wedding, and everyone on the team asked to see pictures. They all expressed that they sought and appreciated this window into a culture that was outside their experience and unfamiliar to them. That’s true inclusivity. That’s the way individuals come together as a team on which everyone has a true sense of connection.

Is it important for everyone to feel connected personally as well as professionally?
Of course! The more we know about one another, the more we know about how to work together and what to expect of one another. There could be a team member who isn’t seen as a risk taker but who turns out to have gone skydiving. That’s a revelation that resonates personally and professionally. That’s not to say that there should be no boundaries on sharing personal information at work. But by cultivating personal connections, we enhance professional performance and professional cohesion as a team.

On a more practical note, how does that approach to diversity translate in terms of the tools, technologies and platforms used for communication and collaboration?
People have different communication styles, preferences, and comfort levels with these platforms. We recognize that, and so we have established a variety of modes of communication and have asked people which ones they prefer for sharing or receiving information. That plays into another aspect of diversity that’s often overlooked: diversity of work styles. Some people like instantaneous exchanges. Others prefer to receive and respond to emails so that they have time to consider what’s under discussion and formulate their responses. Some prefer voice communication, whether that’s in person or over the phone. Adopting multiple mechanisms shows respect for those preferences, makes it easier to get the best work out of everyone and makes each team member feel valued and happy to be here — and in the final analysis, that matters more than requiring the use of a company-mandated text or group chat format.

How do you ensure that prospective employees are aware of this aspect of the company’s culture?
The best way for me to answer that is to share my experience of being recruited to work here. I wasn’t looking for a new job. I was pretty happy where I was. But I called one of my former supervisors and mentioned having been contacted by an 色多多视频recruiter, and he said it was the right place for me to work and the best next step I could hope for in my career. That conversation led to my understanding that this was not only the leader for cyber, but also a place where I could grow into new levels of responsibility. Here was a company where women were managing claims teams and being supported for growth into leadership positions.

I think about that now when I need to attract candidates with that same leadership potential. They don’t need a recitation of boilerplate language about valuing diversity. We can show it to them in action. It’s here. It’s now. Not just on paper, but in practice. I can offer myself — and many of my colleagues — as examples of what you can achieve here. I don’t mean to come across as a cheerleader. But it’s been amazing to come to 色多多视频and see people growing around me and making the most of their strengths. That’s the core of the loyalty we have to one another and to the company.
