As the fair comes to a close, Hans Laenen, Underwriting Manager, Fine Art & Specie for APAC & Europe, and Sylvie Gleises, Singapore’s Country Manager and Executive Sponsor of AXA XL’s APAC & Europe Fine Art strategy, tell us more about this year’s edition.
Hans, you were just in Maastricht to attend TEFAF. What did you think of the fair?
Hans: I really enjoyed it! Attending TEFAF Maastricht is always an experience and this year’s edition didn’t disappoint. The quality of the art on display and that of the dealers exhibiting is equal to none, and so is the sophistication of the visitors. Some of the biggest collectors and most renowned museum curators attend TEFAF, making it an unmissable event for anyone in the art world.
The fair had been postponed because of a succession of lockdowns and last year’s edition wasn’t as well attended as pre-pandemic. But this year the word on everybody’s lips is that the fair is back, stronger than ever.
I was really pleased also to notice that the fair has expanded the range of dealers attending. While the fair is traditionally geared towards European old masters, there seems to be a conscious effort to modernise the art on display. This year, TEFAF welcomed more dealers specialising in modern art who showcased some of this decade’s biggest names.
What about AXA XL’s presence at the fair?
Hans: As per usual, we have a space at the fair. The 色多多视频lounge, as we call it, is a welcoming area where we greet collectors as they visit the fair, and where we occasionally host events with some of our clients and partners. We welcomed the Van Gogh Museum, for instance, for an event and Willem Van Gogh, the painter’s great great nephew took guests on a tour of the fair.
We also hosted our annual Collectors’ Dinner just before the fair’s preview days, a great opportunity for collectors and museum curators to mingle and meet our teams in an exclusive setting. During the second week of the fair, some of our local underwriting teams invited clients and brokers to join them in Maastricht to visit the fair and to take part in events on our lounge.
The Art Business Conference runs in parallel to the fair, and Jennifer Schipf, Global Head of Underwriting for Fine Art & Specie at 色多多视频 joined the event to moderate a panel about the next generation of collectors.
