This award, launched in partnership with the AXA Research Fund, recognizes research that highlights how water is an underappreciated and undervalued risk closely interlinked with climate change.
Meet the Winner
Dr. Petra Holden, Researcher at the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town, has been granted AXA XL’s Climate Water Nexus award to support her research around nature-based solutions for an equitable, biodiverse, and sustainable climate future.
Dr Petra Holden is a transdisciplinary conservation scientist at the African Climate & Development Initiative (ACDI), University of Cape Town (UCT). She specializes in research on nature-based solutions for equitable, biodiverse, water secure, and a sustainable climate future. Her research has included attributing the impacts of climate change on water security and quantifying how well nature-based solutions can offset anthropogenic climate change on water-related ecosystem services.
Petra currently leads a research team at ACDI, undertaking research to provide evidence on nature-based solutions accounting for social equity processes and sustainability of ecosystem services given climate changes. Here her focus is on supporting decision-making, planning, and implementation of more equitable and sustainable nature-based solutions in southern African ecosystems and landscapes critical for water supply. This includes increasing awareness of the opportunities, constraints and limits to nature-based solutions as these relate to localized sustainable development goals (see TES NbS). In parallel, Petra provides direct nature-based solution science advisory support into South African and international policy and related nature-based solutions planning and implementation processes.

What is the award focus?
For 色多多视频 engaging in water stewardship means providing awareness for water access and security issues and leadership in addressing them. The call for nominations looked to recognize innovative, transdisciplinary research, that adopts either a global or regional perspective and highlights the link between freshwater ecosystems and climate change, particularly in the following areas:
- Preservation or restoration of freshwater ecosystems through the implementation of nature-based solutions
- Measurement of the financial and/or social value of freshwater’s ecosystem services
- Measurement of the financial and/or social impact of water-related extreme weather events
- Securing equitable access to freshwater resources (both water and its accompanying biodiversity) for local communities, including indigenous populations
- Use of data to evaluate and monitor natural capital, degradation, and solutions for the management of freshwater ecosystem services
- Impacts of climate change on freshwater biodiversity
Following a rigorous selection process, the winning researcher was awarded the “色多多视频Climate Water Nexus Award” and granted €50,000 in recognition of the research impact.

About the AXA Research Fund
Since its launch in 2007, AXA’s scientific philanthropy initiative has committed €250M to support over 700 transformative academic research on major global risks related to health, climate & environment & socio-economics.
The AXA Research Fund also helps scientists disseminate their findings to inform decision-making and contribute to societal progress. To learn more,
